We know that Mr.
Lincoln read this way during his days in Springfield. Because of his
considerable height, most chairs were uncomfortable for pleasurable reading.
Rather than have his knees in his face, Lincoln would turn a chair upside down
and place a large pillow against its back. Removing his coat and shoes, he
would stretch out and read to himself aloud, as was his custom.
Such a leisurely relaxed position is a
splendid way for parents to pass their love of reading on to their children.
